Mention the Algarve to most people and a little thought cloud comes out of them with rudimentary images of sun, beach, and hotel. People like this are ignorant to the fact that the Algarve is one of the best places in our solar system to go and have a game of golf. With over twenty championship standard courses, here are just four of them:

1. Vilamoura, the old course

Vilamoura, the old course was designed on the premise that it was to be bother challenging and beautiful. Premises successfully set by its designer, the architect Frank Pennink. It is a course with a lot of features, that make it considerably fun, although, perhaps not one for the beginner. The layout of the course is distinctly parkland, and it is known affectionately as the Grand Dame of the Algarve. This being due to the fact that it is one of the oldest courses in the region. It is a course that was voted in the top 100 in the world, by Golf Digest magazine.

2. Quinta da Ria/ Quinta da Cima

Golfing is so much better when you have epoch altering views. The Quinta da Ria golf course is home to two 18-hole golf courses of exquisite quality. Both of the courses are the hard work of William Roquemore. The Quinta da Ria is a course that comprises of two looped sets of nine, and it is a par 72. You can sniff olive and carob trees as you gawp at fabulous mountain and sea scenery. This is a course that could probably be managed by a beginner. As for its neighbouring brother, Quinta da Cima, well ladies and gentlemen. Youre in for a real treat! They opened the course relatively recently in the Summer of 2002. Since then people have been coming in greater and greater numbers, to play what has become the most popular championship course in the Algarve. With its dog legs and bunkers and lakes and rough it really is a challenge that needs taming. Nobody that plays the course ever complains, because that is just how good it is. In 2004 it was voted the number one golf course in the Algarve, with Quinta da Ria being the number two. So it could be supposed that visiting these two courses would be the smartest move you could make if you are going for a golfing trip in the Algarve, and if you were to suppose this, then you would not be disappointed.

3. Penina Championship Course.

What a blinking stunner! It is the eldest golf course in the Algarve, Ill have you know, so show a little respect! Good old Henry Cotton went all guns blazing with his golfing vision in this one. The Portuguese open has been held here on quite a number of occasions. It is built on relatively flat land, and has loads of really long holes. There are loads of trees, bunkers and water hazards, so watch out! The greens are big too, so just because your on one, dont think your on for par, matey! Certainly not. This really is a great championship course.

4. Alto Golf & Country Club

By the name of this one, you may be able to guess that it is not just a golf course, but one of the most exclusive country clubs in the Algarve region. There is a massive garden that runs right the way through the golf course, which is really something. It is another course that was designed by Sir Henry Cotton, and while designing it, he was looking at trying to make a golf course that would be challenging for professionals, as well as be accessible for the lesser skilled player. This is reflected in the winding fairways, and elevated greens. There is a fantastic view of the bay of Lagos, that can be taken advantage of from every single one of the opening 9. It is worth visiting this golf course, just for the fabulous Henry Cotton challenge, which is a gargantuan, 604 metre par 5. It takes some serious accuracy to find your way to the green, and it is certainly a fun challenge.
