An Introduction To Video Teleconferencing

By Robert A. Leggio Jr C.T.S

Video teleconferencing is the interaction between two locations made possible through the use of a series of telecommunication technologies. These technologies allow these two locations to interact through the audio/visual portal created. The rise of video teleconferencing (also known as video conferencing) developed as a response to the rising need for collaboration over increasing distances between businesses and their employees and clients.

As businesses expanded and became more globalized, the cost of travel and the need for instantaneous communication drove teleconferencing technologies. Today, as more businesses seek more effective communication channels, video teleconferencing has become the solution of choice for most.

Businesses all over the world have one fundamental need: effective communication. This need is born of the fact that for a business to operate effectively, the flow of information within the organization must be timely, accurate, targeted and segregated. This means that as the business grows, the morning meetings before work become obsolete as some employees are working halfway across the globe.

If that is not the case, the efficient use of time mandates the use of more advanced communication technologies. Video teleconferencing bridges this communication gap effectively. Due to its audio/visual nature, these communication systems function more effectively than a mere phone call or chat session would.

One of the newest and most innovative video teleconferencing technologies on the market is telepresence. This videoconferencing technology brings together a host of other technologies to create an even more effective communication system. Telepresence is defined as a technological interface that attempts to transmit as much of the communicating person to the other point as possible.

This involves the transmission of the other person’s environment, emotions, actions, and literal presence. One of the key advantages of this technology is that it provides the telecommuter a realistic interaction with their place of work. For example, a secretary can telecommute over a thousand miles every day to provide reception and front office services to the office.

Video teleconferencing has many benefits to offer any business or profession. Many businesses that have integrated this technology into their businesses site a number of reasons. The first is a reduction in traveling costs. This is obvious as employees who are not geographically proximal need not travel physically in order to attend meetings. This also reduces the company’s carbon footprint. Another benefit is the improvement of employees’ work/life balance. Two of the most tedious and costly aspects of employment are the commuting and housing needs of employees.

Video teleconferencing has improved telecommuting as well as global business employee networks. This means that a company can hire someone who lives a large distance away and still be able to work with them effectively. Finally, this improves the productivity of employees as they have less stress and complete their work more efficiently. This significantly increases their productivity.

The technology can be applied to any business setup. Doctors, lawyers, architects, small business owners, large multinationals, and so on use video teleconferencing. As long as there is a need for communication over large distances, video teleconferencing is indispensable.
